Do you tear up credit card offers?

I received 3 credit card applications in the mail today. One for Citi financial, and 2 for Capital One. I rip them up into many pieces but didn't shredd them since we don't own a shredder. Would someone ever go through my garbage and try to piece together an application that is ripped into 12-15 pieces?

After reading this man's story of apply for a credit card using a torn-up application, I need to run out and get a shredder.

Even mailing it to a different address and using a cell phone activate makes this situation seem even more scary.

What can you do:
Opt out of credit card offers at https://www.optoutprescreen.com or call 800-5OPT-OUT

I have also heard of people putting the cut-up applications into a bag of used kitty-litter after cleaning the litter box. Maybe the thing to do until you get a shredder is to pour something yucky on the papers, LOL! It would sure teach a potential thief a lesson.
