Thrifty Thursday rewind Feb 28th

Welcome to this week's Thrifty Thursday!  This is the first full week of school for my 3 boys since before Christmas.  Crazy but with a couple of half days, snow days, February school vacation it can throw a wrench into the schedule.  I am primarily a stay at home mom  for over 11 years now.  I do some work at home and starting school  subbing this year but consider myself a stay at home mom.   I have stayed a stay at home mom because honestly as the boys have gotten older their schedules have gotten crazier.   I have one son on the autism spectrum that does require constant supervision plus he has several therapies we do after school.  It works for my family because we have made it a priority.

I had a really rough start to be a stay at home mom and it could have ended before it ended started.  So you want to be a stay at home mom  has what I wished I did to make the transition more smoothly.

What would your tips be if you were talking to someone who wanted to be a stay at home mom.

How to Save Money on Prescription Drugs Meds

ABC news did a segment on how to save money on your prescriptions  we have number of prescriptions and this is good advice!

1.   Check your bill, like you would at a restaurant.
Believe it or not, there are codes for your drugs, and billing departments often get them wrong. In seconds,

2. Arm    yourself with the Low RX App.
Did you know that drug prices fluctuate like gas prices? This iphone app tells you what the average cost is for a particular drug and its generic, and arms you with the phone numbers of every pharmacy in your area. You can call other pharmacies to comparison shop.  The app also shows discounts.

3.   Go to big wholesalers, even if you’re not a member.
The Low RX app told ABC News to go to Costco, and as it turned out,  by law you could buy your prescription drugs there even if you weren’t a member.

4.   Negotiate.
If you do go to smaller mom-and-pop local  pharmacies instead of the chain ones, you can wheel and deal to bring the price down. Bringing cash can increase your bargaining power.

5.   You can go directly to the big drug companies.
Katz called and emailed large drug companies on behalf of Cari and Andrew. She kept at it for weeks, providing proof of the family’s financial situation and even suggested that Cari might have to stop buying its particular drug altogether.

6.   Visit Needymeds.com.
Needymeds is a nonprofit group that offers grants, vouchers and patient assistance through its website.

7.   Use an RX discount card.

Together Rx Access offers savings on brand-name and generic prescription products to individuals and families without prescription drug coverage, according to its website.

Frugal Five Meet Lori an overseas military wife

Lori is a frugal military mom currently stationed overseas in Europe.

What is your financial life?
We're a US military family currently stationed overseas. We've been married for 10 years and have 2 children, 5 and 2. In 2008/09 our life changed drastically; I left my job, plus had our first baby, my husband enlisted in the military, and we began moving around the world. In 2008 our net worth was -$10,000. Since then on one income as lower enlisted military we've been able to increase our net worth to $335,000 - in 5 years bringing in only about $4,000 a month.

I'm currently working on my Accredited Financial Counselor practicum hours. As an AFC I hope to be able to work one on one and with groups to help them find the financial freedom that we've been able to create in our household. The thing I like most that our family does is we have written goals. They are SMART goals which are Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic and Timebound. Every month I clear out our zero balance budget, my husband and I sit down and talk about what we did well and what we need to do better, then we take the leftover money for that month and we decide which of our goals to plug that money into; paying down a mortgage, college funds, travel fund (we currently live in Europe!), cash for car fund and retirement. This makes the whole rest of the month so much more worth it to see our successes and our goals being completed.

What is your budget buster?
My husband! He has, as Dave Ramsey puts it, a blow fund - but that keeps him out of the family funds and gives him the freedom to keep doing what we're doing.

What is your favorite money saving tip?
Nothing is sacred. Using Mint.com we've been able to track nearly every penny and plug up the budget leaks as best we can. Don't make your budget strangle you to death but find compromises that save your sanity and your budget. 1 starbucks a week instead of 5 - it'll add up! Just make that money do something.

Other best value tips are cooking at home, using cloth diapers (the new products are fabulous!), carrying snacks, swapping babysitting with another couple, buying used cars... - there are just so many great ways to save money.

And track your money - all of it. If you don't tell your money where to go and what to do, you'll never know where it went. Tax refunds are a great way to build your emergency fund and retirement savings. Tell them what to do before they swoosh down the toilet never to be seen again.

If you had an extra $1000 what would you do with it?
It would be invested for retirement. We are just starting to put money into the new Roth TSP in addition to our Roth IRAs.

What is your best resource for frugal living?
I love Mint.com as a tool. It's fantastic and speaks my language.
My website of tips is http://feedingyourpig.blogspot.com - hundreds of simple and not so simple tips
I'm currently attending  Dave Ramseys Financial Peace  University - great motivation builder
Really never stop learning, never stop dreaming and never stop trying. If you have a budget problem - google it, email a blogger, find a financial counselor - so many options - you just have to search and be willing listen and learn and try.

    Thrifty Thursday rewind Feb 21st

Welcome to this week's Thrifty Thursday! My boys are on school vacation so we are a bit loser here with the scheduling and spending some money.  We have gone to see Escape from Planet Earth,  gone ice skating  (glad I didn't break a leg) and plan on going bowling today and out to lunch today.    The movie tickets were given as Christmas gifts,  and the bowling is $20 from a groupon deal and so is our lunch!    I try to stay frugal.

One of my dear friends and neighbors just found out this  week that she getting laid off her from her job at the end of March. It is a small family owned company and they are closing down.  We have talked money from time to time and she knows that we went through a big layoff back in 2009.  She does have some credit card debt and her mortgage is decent sized.

How to deal with a job layoff  is how some of things my family did based on some tips from I had shared earlier.

Have you had to deal with a layoff in your own career or did your spouse? How did you make out.

Keep your home filled with Health Snacks for Kids

Kids  love to snack and they usually turn up their noses when it comes to healthy snacks. After they have filled their stomachs with cookies , chips  or chocolate, you will be lucky if they will eat a nutritious meal. Grazing on unhealthy snacks throughout the day  is a habit that can be broken, but the kids actually need some help with that. They need to be presented with healthy kids snacks as an alternative to munching on foods that have no nutritional value or are harmful to their health.
Some kids  are mature enough to be educated on eating healthy and they will adapt quickly if they actually desire to take their health into their own hands. Most kids, however, do not really care about health, especially when it comes to snacks. Here are some ideas to present nutritional snacks to your kids:

    Keep fresh fruit easily available

    healthy fruit snacks for kids
Most kids cannot resist a bowl full of fresh fruit. Provide a variety of fruits, some of which they have never tried. A variety of fruit is bound to appeal to even the picky eaters.I often throw  grapes in the freezer  and slice up apples and put peanut butter on them.    For special treats, you could help the kids to make chocolate dipped fruits or banana popsicles.

    Easy Smoothies   for kids

Smoothies are a great alternative to milkshakes and are actually healthy snacks that kids love. You can use yogurt, fresh fruit and low fat milk and whip up a smoothie in the blender in seconds. Many children will enjoy making their own smoothies so it might be a good idea to get them involved.  One thing is very popular in our house is that I take a bag of frozen strawberries and put in the blender with some milk . It makes a creamy  strawberry ice cream.
    Kids and Gardening
We have a huge garden in our backyard  and my boys are responsible for weeding it.  Believe it or not, children are more likely to eat vegetables if they grow them themselves. Gardening is an excellent adventure and a great way to spend quality time with your kids.  Prepare a snack tray with veggies and  dip or hummus .  You might even try preparing celery with peanut butter as a snack.
     Healthy snack mix.
Grain based and granola cereals  and whole wheat crackers like Triscuits  are a lot healthier than other snacks that are a choice of children. Mixing these cereals with nuts, raisins or other dried fruit can make a healthy kids snack that they can munch on.
    Juice it.
If your children refuse to eat fruits and vegetables for snacks, you can always pass it off as juice to ensure that your kids get the nutrition that they desperately need. You can run fresh fruit and veggies through a juicer and come up with a homemade juice that is sure to get attention. You can  even try making a slushie  out of the juice by running it through a blender full of ice. You can also make popsicles out of freshly made fruit and vegetable juice.
Tempting a kid with healthy snacks can be a challenge if they are attuned to snacking on junk food. You are better off if you start from the beginning and develop good eating habits when they are babies and toddlers  but it is never too late to teach kids to eat healthy.

Frugal Five Meet Lynn from Oklahoma

Lynn is a frugal momma living in Oklahoma

    What is your financial life?

I am married with 3  boys ages 12,10 and 7.  I work part time while the boys are at school at a local property and casualty insurance company    I have been able to recently scream “ I AM DEBT FREE” like many other many others that follow Dave Ramsey money plan.  We had a lot of debt due to hospital and  medical bills  with my youngest son who had some major respiratory issues 3 years ago  that we owed to the hospital and doctors   We also had some credit card debt.

    What is your budget buster?

Have you seen what boys eat! They are growing and growing.  My food budget keeps on going up.   I try to coupon as much as possible.  While we were in debt, it was  the medical bills that piled up.  Even with medical insurance there are a lot of co-pays and other out of pocket payments that you need to make.   We ended up putting a lot of the co-pays on credit card debt as well as felt that we needed to reward ourselves with a big  $5k vacation after he was finally ok.

What is your favorite money saving tip?

I  would like to thank Dave Ramsey for his training, and for imparting in me  a "gazelle-like intensity" toward attacking our  credit card and medical debt. I would also like to thank the  boys for hanging in there and homemade snacks and sandwiches   at soccer, and ball games while all the other kids had nachos or hot dogs  from the snack  stand, but we would like to inform you that we still will NOT be buying those nachos.  Nachos  equals them getting their own ipads, itouches, tablets.

It took awhile for my husband to get onboard with paying off the debt.  I had to be the “nerd” in the family with the math and the excitement.   Showing him the math really helped get him onboard. If you have a reluctant spouse  start it off yourself.

If you had an extra $1000 what would you do with it?

Right now we are building up Baby Step 3 emergency fund.   We need to put 20k in it for our 6 month fund.  I still have the gazelle like intensity to get this funded.

What is your best resource for frugal living?

I love all things Dave Ramsey. I am so glad I heard him on the radio one day while driving.  I download his podcasts daily from itunes and go on my daily walk.
