Thrifty Thursday rewind November 1st

Welcome to the Thrifty Thursday rewind. We made out  fine during Hurricane Sandy and were only without power for 15 hours. Not bad compared to the 72 hours we were without power during Hurricane Irene last year.   My prayers with the people in New Jersey and New York who have lost their homes.  Please make a donation to the American Red cross or another organization in the local area, Maybe you don't go out to eat this weekend or go to the movies-these folks need our help.

One of my goals each year is to not turn on the heat until November 1st! I am happy to say that this year I made it.   Maybe years I usually only get to the last week of October.

My entry for this week is  Programmable thermostats are worth it Do you have one?  What do you set your temp on during the winter months?

Thrifty Thursday rewind October 11th

Welcome to the Thrifty Thursday rewind!

Going to the movies can be expensive but there are some tips on not paying full price when you go.  We go to the movies 5-6 times a year.  Over  our vacation, we went to the drive in movie this year to see Diary of a Wimpy kid for all 5 of us it was $20!  We went to the movies on Monday when the kids had off from school to see the new Adam Sandler movie Hotel Transylvania. I did buy some popcorn that the 3 boys and I split.    We used movie passes that we were given last Christmas from one of their aunts.

Thrifty Thursday rewind October 4th

Welcome to this week's Thrifty Thursday rewind!  I am in the midst of pantry challenge trying to use up what we have before  I go on any big shopping sprees for the basics.  I do stock up on basics when I find a really good sale and even better if I can match them up with coupons.

Occasionally I need a reminder for  5 things every kitchen needs

Thrifty Thursday rewind September 27th

Welcome to the Thrifty Thursday rewind!  I am excited to we have team up with A Life in Balance for Thrifty Thursday going forward!

I can't believe it is end of September.  We have successfully completed the first  month of school.  I have been doing this blog for almost 8 years  7 years ago this month I did
One hundred things about my money life  I took a look back at some things  that changed.   Many things stayed the same even though my boys are growing up. I was frugal then and I am frugal now.

What changed....

2. I don't need tivo, if I want to record something. I got a vcr.  (VCR is long no longer around  but we have Hulu plus)

3. I don't have an Ipod, I got plenty of CDs and the radio  I did get an ipod shuffle in 2007 and I did treat myself to an iphone in 2010. I know it a want not a need. I will have it for years no need to upgrade again.

7 We do have cable tv, but I refuse upgrade to digital tv.  We did upgrade to digital cable for a few  years when they gave us a decent package but we dropped down to basic cable in 2011.

 20. I do have one car loan which should be paid off within 18 months.   (That car is long paid off and I am still driving it.  We bought another car in June 2009 100% cash. I  hope to never have a car loan again)

21. I am on Dave Ramsey' Baby step number 3 but I don't follow all of his rules. I like Dave for debt reduction. We are currently doing steps 4 and 5 –retirement and college.  Ocassionally I go back to step 3 if we needed to dip into the Emergency fund.

40. I live in Walmart Not really anymore more of a Target girl since they openend in my neighborhood 5 years ago.

41`. I have a budget category called Walmart  Nope got rid of this

42. I buy Walmart brand diapers
Luckily not anymore my kids have been potty trained for years.

47. Saturday nights that menu plans usually goes out the window.  (actually we are much better about this now-especially  since I got 2 boys that don’t eat off the kids menu anymore. We have established pizza  and movie night for Saturdays in our house

48. I am not organized enough to use coupons.  Actually I have gotten better  on this!

50. I go to the bread store and get good deals there Bread store closed down years ago.

94. I am filling up my gas tank today. It was $2.75 at the station down the street. (Gas it about $3.80 a gallon)

97. They just said with gas could go up to $4.00 a gallon with Hurricane Rita on the radio.  Gas did hit over $4.00 a gallon

99. DH's work isn't that far.  I wish I could say this was true. He got laid off from a year in 2009 and it took about 6 months to find another money.  Luckily we had savings plus unemployment. He is making less than he at his old job.

Thrifty Thursday Rewind September 20th

Welcome to the Thrifty Thursday rewind.  One thing I am hearing alot of lately is very high car payments on some of the money themed message boards that I see.   I learned from my parents not to have a car loan more than 3 years and keep it around $200 a month.  I have kept to that advice.   We don't have any auto loans right now since we bought our last car in cash.  I don't buy brand new cars I buy a few year later and have a savings for buying a new to us car.  Knock on wood, we won't have to buy a  car for a few years.

Are you Car Rich, Cash Poor? We no longer but have our 1996 but I still drive my 2001 around town.

Thrifty Thursday rewind August 30th

Here is our Thrifty Thursday rewind! We have started school this week and getting into the routine.   The new school year is always time of reflection and renewal for me even more then the beginning of the actual new year.

One thing to double check is your financial goals and make sure you are keeping on track  .  Are you sloppy and getting away with it? is kind of reminder

Thrifty Thursday rewind August 23rd

Welcome to another Thrifty Thursday rewind link-up!

You never know when you are going to have a money emergency, a murphy's law event happen in your life. Life is so much less stressful when have money saved up to handle those things.

We had a job loss in 2009 and our finished  basement flooded in 2010. Two things that hit our emergency fund pretty hard.

Have you ever had  to use your rainy day fund?   Here are some tips that  I shared back in 2007 that I used when we had our "big emergencies"  When a rainy day happens

Thrifty Thursday August 16th

We are in the midst of coming back from summer vacation.  I am lucky that my parents own a  beautiful cottage on a nice lake.  Since my Mom is now retired earlier this  year  my Dad and her spend the majority of the summer up there.

Here are some past frugal posts that I have mention about my parents and my upbringing about money.

Are we better off than our parents?

Our No spend vacation  (of course this was after our big Disney adventure' let's say this year was not No spend)

Did you learn your money habits from your mom? ( I actually wrote this up in the cottage while on dial up  back in 2005. No internet up there and even 3g cell service is touchy at best I don't think I would know how to use dial up internet now)

Thrifty Thursday rewind August 9th

Happy Thursday!

It is back to school for many families at this time.  We don't go back until the end of August and we are taking a quick trip to my parent's cottage before hand.  However,  I am getting into the swing of back to school shopping.     The back-to-school season is one of the largest sales season for the United States retail . industry, second only to the Christmas holiday selling season.

Do you really need to get everything new?  I shared in the past when my boys were preschoolers  and 1st grader   about  Back to school shopping in the closet     I still do follow some strategies but  I have to admit it is little tougher now .  My mom oftens buys my boys alot of clothes at Christmas and their birthday that are often two sizes too big. (she still doesn't learn 7 years later)

So share your back to school shopping techniques or any other frugal advice we would love to have you here on our frugal blog.
